Need technical Q/A then you're in the right place

Another thread has set me thinking.. Zayyans fault actually.

So I've weighed the 3 15" BMW/BBS wheels I have in the attic (one day they'll be worth millions) which have no tyres - they weigh 7.3 kg, though one of them weighs 7.5 kg :?

I've also got a new O/E Subaru 16" alloy with no tyre, and that weighs 7.6kg

And the other wheels I have without tyres are 17" Prodrive Speedlines, and these all weigh 10.1kg

That is a big percentage difference.

So does anyone have (genuine) Hartge or Alpinas without tyres they could weigh for comparison? I know your scales might be more/less accurate than mine, but it should be close enough to give us an idea.

The other thread was talking about the advantages of the 15" genuine BBS vs 16" or even 17"s, and Zayyan mentioned weight.......

I wouldn't have thought there'd be a big difference between "quality" 15" or 16" wheels.

My comment about 17" wheels being heavy was referring to Alpina reps and the like (though mostly Alpina reps as it's got to be the most common 17" wheel for people to put on E30s). If you've ever had to lift a 17" BK 171 you'll know what I'm talking about

Zayyan - the 17s I've got are genuine Prodrive 7 spokes, made by Speedline - they weigh a LOT more than either of my 15s or 16s

what I'm trying to do is find out why - the more info from different wheels the better

Simon - thanks, I thought you might have the answer :D (do you still have some spare Hartges lying around then? )

is that genuine Motorsport? 17s? Do you know the actual weight?

perhaps it means once you get to 17", the tyrewall doesn't protect the wheel as much, so the wheel has to be a lot stronger and therefore heavier?

How much weight can a layer of grey paint add to a wheel!?

Or do you mean those E36 M3 replicas? :puke:
