Early prefacelift engines need the 073 ECU post facelift need the 173.

So your early engine in a late shell will defo need the 073.

All the required stuff from your late engine will bolt on to your earlier engine this will allow you to your keep late ecu and all the loom.
Change inlet manifold CAS and wheel etc. Plug holes in gearbox.
I had to change my late 2ltr
A very lucky find was a genuine 35000 mile e21 engine (pre motronic) removed from a write off thirteen years previous. For £60.
All the late stuff changed straight over, the only exception was the two dowel holes were missing on cylinder head for timing cover (but so easy sorted).
So if a pre motronic e21 motor converts using all late e30 electronics an early e30 one will also.

Yeah should be fine, someone mentioned something about the ecu not being compatible.

Either way everythings cool cheers Dan :D

Methinks earlier motor uses sensors @ gearbox I would be inclined to stick all the late wiring and matching bits on, keeping ecu. All will look as it should then. (As my previous e21 post, ALL WILL FIT) including gearbox just that the earlier box has unneeded sensor holes.
