on a 87 jetronic car can the wires to the starter be presumed to be black for earth and red for live if factory wires? - this time i am fitting a facelift starter to a jetronic car and not sure what to hook which wire up to which terminal
does anyone know?

Not familiar with E30s this old, but there's not normally an earth wire connected to an E30 starter motor. It earths to the block by its mounting bolts, then to the body by the block to chassis rail earth strap, and thento the battery by the battery - lead.
The thick battery lead from battery+ to the starter motor is usually black on E30s, and a red lead from the altenator usually connects to the same terminal on the starter motor, so that the charging current ids fed back up the black wire to the battery.
BMW earth wires are brown or brown/orange, although a few have a black outer sleeve over the brown.
