Anyone know anything about this conversion??
Pros / Cons?
What combo of pistons and rods can / could be used?

I have been offered a "good value" winkeye S50 crank which I think I'd be stupid to turn down and I'm just wondering what else I'll need, I've done a load of research and think I know but just want to hear what you guys have to say.

I have the facilities through a friend to do machining so that's not a problem, but does anyone know if there is a piston rod combo that can be used to save me going down the custom piston route? Which I would be happy to do but it will just mean it will take a lot longert to do as I will only be buying stuff as and when I can afford it.If I do buy it I envisage just building up the engine will take 12 months, unless I make loads of money!

Give me the crank, because I heard these work well in the M50 2.5 to make it 3ltr winkeye

My goal.............................Hmmmmmmmmmm..........
A challange............. to be different......... 200+ bhp....... a unique engine built with my fair hand.......... and I would like the car to look standard, and I'd be able to drop it in to any E30 without any modifications.
But mostly to build a different engine. I just thought if I'm going to go to all the trouble of building a decent 2.7 then I might as well do the same amount of work and get some extra cubes. I recon I'll get M30 power easily hopefully a bit more with ITB's and really good M/S fuelling, but it will be a running project so I'll just start it on 325 fuelling.

Ill just copy bits from some of my posts on dtm :)
ouch, the secret is out about US cranks now, ive spoken to a couple of suppliers in the US this afternoon who had cranks 6 month's ago to find they dont have any at all, now they are selling like hot cakes :o Damn E30 owners :p

The wildly expensive IE kit is actually looking like a good price considering the $2300 US cost to replace a 3L US crankshaft :( 86mm is about the largest (80 thou) rebore i would go on an M20 block without sonic testing to find out just how much metal actually exists. With the crank that will give you 3L. Im kinda leaning towards the 2.8L crank and a piston / rod combination from other engines at the moment, a change of pistons changes deck heights really easy, with one piston you can drop 1mm+ below giving you a good compression ratio for a turbo, then with another change you can be 1mm over with a raised crown and bumping the compression ratio up for a good NA engine. You would be surprised the number of components that will actually fit inside an M20 block, its because the M50, M52 and M54 engines are all derived from the same design, that being the good ol M20 :)

Edit: You will probably find the bmwworld weights might be for a complete engine. The bmw weight list is for an engine minus fluids, manifolds and accessories. So basically it's just a long motor. Dont forget that some of the US engines had iron blocks too, so there is a bit of a difference between some US and euro spec motors.

M20 crank left, M50 crank right.

Image

Same again, can see the difference on the nose, M20 has a section for the seal, M50 one doesnt.

Image

M50 crank sitting there, bearing cap installed. Can see the first bearing lines up fine with the standard M20 block.

Image

Pretty average pic, but you can see the M50 crank sitting in there with no problems. Again, its because the main bearings are the same size.

Image

Can see the sleeve installed, plus the reason why you need it (the seal).

Image

Crank + pistons installed, bolted down.

Image

Its only the 3L cranks from the US spec cars that work, we didnt get a 3L M50 or M52 here, so you are pretty much limited to an M54 motor which isnt going to be too common over here (not in parts anyway). Our M3 motors arent any good for this, they are euro spec motors which have a totally redeveloped bottom end, bearing sizes are larger so it wont fit.
So, no, S50 crank wont be any good, you need the S50US item, or a 3L crank from an M54.

There are no pistons and rods you can use that will fit. You can use the standard 130mm (320i/323i/325e) forged rods or use the 135mm 325i rods (or similar M52 length items) but you need a custom piston to fit.

When using the 135mm rods you need a piston with a compression height of around 28.8mm (i can give you the exact figures, i just need to look them up in my book), with the shorter 130mm rods its obviously going to be 5mm more (33.8mm).

Pros are increased torque and horsepower that is going to go with it. Going to make for an M20 torque monster.

Cons, cost, machining, need to do your research with head porting/polishing and need to match cams to suit. Increased piston speed so you should plan for the engine to reach high revs.

Edit: forgot to say im building a 3L one now (just waiting for the crank to arrive from the US, should be here in 3-4 weeks), with 45mm ITB setup, plus a nice large holset turbo to bolt on to it once its built :)

Ive got the throttles already, they arrived last week :)

should be interesting 8)

Right I've just had a quick look on the ETK, the S50 crank is listed as having 59-60mm bmain bearings and the M20 59-60mm main bearings. Although the big ends are bigger so I will have to use the M3 rods. So what's the problem. I find it hard to believe the same engine, S50, had different size cranks in the US and UK.

this is the only bit I dont get. for the same price as your crank you can have a m30 3.5 lump and gearbox and 220bhp as standard.

then for the money you'd have spent on pistons, some ITB and a turbo on the m30 would give you a bruiser of an engine.

as for swapping it to any e30, there will still exist the issues between 4pot and 6pot wiring, regardless of the engine you use.

like i've said before-go for the 3.0 m20 if ya want-would be awesome!!!

Yeah but every one on this website says why don't you go M30.........It's boring, Niel you understand that! winkeye

And I'm not talking about putting it in a 4 pot :puke:

How sad would it have been if GUG had just had someone put a 3.5 in it.

The 3.5 is heavy, large, a totally different engine, and is only 220BHP for 3.5 litres!!!!!!!!! and it drinks like a fish!
You could say wht do people bother with 2.7's when they could just as well get a 3.5..........

IMO if you are going to go to the hassle of changine engine (unless it's somthing totally silly, V12 or V8) they you might aswell just buy another car. If you want to go fast go and buy an E36 M3! I want to stay original to the E30 so tuning boreing and stroking the M20 is what I will do, and I don't do turbos superchargers or any FI. and I should have stage 1 of this project done for the same price as fitting an M30 which is always quoted as being a grand minimum.

it may be boring but it can spell   and i've tried to help, esp on the crank front!

you're tellin me if you'd spanked your car and a spotless 318i 2door shell came up, you'd pass it by?

as far as I recall, the GUG was making 213bhp out of an engine that had £5+k spanked on it, m30 gives 220 for £150ish, not to mention the torque and thats standard, so not stressed.

not puttin ya off dude-just playin devils advocate-you know i like the idea of the 3.0 m20!

Yeah no problem mate, but I also know you like the idea of a 2.0 M20 supercharged and running on Holley down draughts winkeye there's no accounting for taste

I'm not after huge amounts of power, yeah more will be nice, it's a project.

Yeah so do I that's why I'm doing a load of research before I commit
