does anybody know what car these came in? post 85 non-cat version perhaps (if there is such a thing)?

They are from '85-'87.
'83-'85 had a CR of 11:1.

Afaik all post '85 ETA's were 10.2:1 and all American ETA's ('82-'87) were as you say, 9.0:1.

Hi you two, Just checked up on my figures from Germany, and they are has follows- 525e without cat( to 8/85) 11.0:1 , 525e without cat( after9/85) 10.2:1. 525e with cat( to 12/86) 9:1 Hope this helps Dave.

I didn't realise they had that compression ratio
. So what other engines do they fit into? Would they fit my 2.3L M20 (323i) or just the 2.5 and/or 2.7 M20? What do they do to the engine capacity? Also I presume a standard M20 could handle the 10.2:1 but what about the 11:1?

Hi Boots-walker, Ive got the part no- for the 11.1 comp which is Mahle: 0823300(std), or KS: 93635 600(std), sorry have not got part nos for other two but working on it, cheers Dave.

think it would be easy to pick up a used set somewhere?
astondg, if you bore your block out to 84mm and fit an eta crank then you will have a nice high compression 2.7
the compression can be droppped down a bit with a thicker head gasket too
