Hey anyone had this?

Replaced the headgasket, put everything back together, after 30 miles heard a rubbing / vibrating noise at 2000rpm, thought might be front cam pully, decided to torque it in, book says 88 ft, i did 40 fine, then 60 fine, tried for eight completely stripped the threads in the cam. NOT HAPPY.

That happened to anyone else?

Mark.

had a cam snap the driven end off up to the 2nd journal but never stripped one, that torque setting is a typo surely, its only an M8 thread( m10 ?)

I dunno these german things seem to have quite high torque settings.
But the 80 sounds too high. Got to admit though I probably would have just followed the boook you don't question these things.
Do you torque everything Ant or just do it by feel?

anything like heads, hubs and wheels are torqued to spec, everything else via feel, I used to work on Jap motors, some of the fasteners must have been made from nob cheese

TBH, given the above situation, it would have been threadlock and torque by feel, good enough IMHO.

That explains why Jap cars are so expensive, they have small willys and therefore a small supply of the aforementioned material. supply and demand, why didn't I realise before
