hi guys,
i recently swap my auto tranny with a manual tranny ... my car is a b20 87 auto and his is a b23 85 manual. After installing the manual tranny i discover that if i do not drag every gear to a rev of 2000 ... i would get a clonk sound from the trans ... coming from the rear side.
Some of my friends said it was because the trans is old so it has some freeplay when i release the clutch before 2000 ... but the thing is sometimes i just can't help shifting it before 2000 esp when traffic is heavy.
any of u guys have an idea what wrong with my trans ... thanks.
freeplay from manual tranny?

Check:
1/ You have fitted everything correctly, and done up all the fasteners.
2/ That the exhaust isn't hitting something.
3/ The rubber bits in the transmission - Guibo, centre prop bearing mount and diff cover bush.

i'm not sure i follow the problem you describe with the 2000rpm; but if you're getting a clonk from the rear on changing up a gear check the diff mounting bolts to the sub-frame these can become loose and cause a clonk on upshift.

yup i will check with that ... i believe it may be the diff...calder wrote:i'm not sure i follow the problem you describe with the 2000rpm; but if you're getting a clonk from the rear on changing up a gear check the diff mounting bolts to the sub-frame these can become loose and cause a clonk on upshift.
