I have checked for leaks under the manifold but all fuel lines seem good. I have just found the text below on the internet, the bloke has a 1993 316i, does this sound correct and where is the cannister?

" If you and your mechanic are 100% absolutely sure there is no fuel leak, then the smell is coming from the evaporative emission system (EES). The most common reason for this happening is the filter for the charcoal canister is dirty and plugged up. Since air can not be drawn into the system, it sucks fuel instead. "

cheers,

John

the canister isnt fitted to your car.
it should be below the AFM (on cars fitted with one)

when can you smell petrol?

You lad's should'nt leave petrol leak's as bad as that! Or drive the car's!
You might wanna carry a fire extinguisher(sp) around with you 8O

Some 316i's have the fuel filter under the bonnet instead of by the N/S/R wheel. Check that this is ok.

the inlet manifold is held on by: 6x 11mm nuts at the back. 2x 10mm bolts in the center.

there are also 2x 10mm bolts holding the bottom section if the TB to the rubber hoses.

you will need to remove the hose off the bottom of the ICV and unplug the TPS off the bottom of the TB

and the throttle cable and AFM pipe.
