I have taken advice from Simon and he's says that your the man to sort my electrical problem.
History. The car is an 1987 M3 which has been parked for ten years.I have just fitted a new thermostat that will not open for some reason. The problem is the temp guage and the rev counter are not working therefore I do not know what temp the car is getting to.I followed Simons advice with regards to an eathing nut on the back of the display which was loose, however it did not cure the problem.I have also tried to put a volt meter on the fitting where the temp sensor goes into the thermostat and there was no reading at all.
Can you help?
Thanks in advance.
Glenn.

The service indicator board in the instrument cluster has some NiCADS on it, these will need replaceing if the car has been sitting for ten years. PM me your e-mail addy and I'll send you a useful word document I've got that explains it.
The Ni CADS/NiMHs power the mpg, rev and temp gauges
Apologies for not being Brian Moore....
