Hi all,
I had the 3 wires connected to the battery terminal in the engine bay.I should have had the large wire on the big round terminal(stump) but as i haven't got a new clamp i just connected all 3 to the smaller connection higher up on the terminal (10 mm nut i think).
There was power there and all was fine,i cranked the engine over and after a couple of seconds nothing. No power there now.
So i just connected all 3 to the big round stump with a pair of mole grips and its all working again appart from the fact that that smaller terminal which is supposed to hold the 2 smaller wires is now dead.
Any ideas ??
This is on my s50 engine but im not sure it will make a differance.
Any help please,
thanks
andy

Andy,
You have popped a fuse.
There's a 50A fuse in the smaller wire that runs from the battery in the boot to the connection under the bonnet. I'm not actually sure exactly where it's located in the car, but somewhere towards the back I believe. Have a look under the plastic trunking that covers the battery cable on the right hand side of the boot. There's a good chance it's under there.
That smaller connection is there to provide power to the injection electronics. When you tried to pull enough current to crank the engine it simply popped the fuse.
You need BMW part 12 41 1 706 111 - approx £4.70
Cheers,
Ian.

I guess that would work okay, but you would be pulling that little bit more current down the main cable. Probably not enough to be a problem, but you never know. I'm not sure why BMW added the extra cable, but I assume they had their reasons. It may be due to voltage drop when cranking.
Cheers,
Ian.

yeah its probably the voltage drop during cranking,it says in the bently manual if i connect them all to the main post then can result in a no start condition during low outside temperatures.
Thanks Ian ,i'll just order one and try and find the little sucker !
cheers

Thanks Glenn ,got the fuse the other day,i've just fitted it tonight.
After all that i dont think i needed to though because i think i wired the fuse box live feeds into the e36 loom therefore i only need the main e36 battery terminal on the main + post.
I think thats how Ian did his , Did you Ian ?
cheers

I did wire the fuse box live feed into the E36 engine loom, but this does not remove the requirement for using the 50A fused circuit from the battery.
Coming out of the E36 engine harness, you should have the big fat beefy cable that goes to the main battery post on the bulkhead. You should also have a thinner wire that needs connecting to the smaller terminal on the bulkhead battery connector (the 50A fuse circuit).
Cheers,
Ian.

Yes it will be fine.stevetigger wrote:will my fuel pump be OK with my M50?
You only need the 5Bar pump on the S50B32 (M3 Evo) and I believe Glenn needed one for his V8 conversion. Both of these engines run a higher pressure fuel regulator.
