Removing top mounts?

iv'e got the strut assembly away from the car but cannot find a way to remove the top mount from the damper. it has a 19mm nut and an 8mm shaft coming from the top of the damper, the nut is too deap in the top mount to get a spanner on it. ive tried to hold the top of the damper with some mole-grips but the damper just kept spinig, even with tape around the damper. anyone know of a tool i could buy to help me. or a way of stoping the damper from spining?

burn the plastic on the locking nut?

but then wouldn't the rubber on the top mount also burn? i could try and use a heat gun to loosen it up then shock it with a breaker bar. would just have to get a new nut then

loosen off the spring compressors until the force of the spring stops the shaft from moving.
then just loosen the nut with a socket.

I assume you didnt want to keep the dampers! if you did want to keep them, you just fuked the shaft with the mole grips. it will start leaking at the point were you damaged the shaft.

there is no damage at all on the shafts i was surprised myself i thought it would of damaged it but it didn't. ill go and uncompress the springs and give that a go. ill let you know how i get on.

- I hope to have your suspension kit off the car soon Luke, but I can't guarantee exactly when I can get it off mate, need to locates some spring compressors for a start! What are you doing with the original stuff, could chuck it on my car to make it easier to get it taken to the scrappers.

Theo325 i working nights next week so be difficult might be able to do it tuesday? yeah you can have my old stuff. i just putting some springs on at the moment 60mm, was gonna wait until i got your dampers but was tired of it looking like a 4x4. ill have to let you know when i free, but would you be free on tuesday?
