Before I took the engine and box out there was a rattling noise when in neutral which went away when the clutch was pressed in.
If I change this before I put the box back in will it stop?

Could be the bearing, and well worth replacing while your there, but it could also be the box. Nothing to worry about, they just get a liitle loose internally - mine has the same problem.

Like Jamesb318is said, the boxes can get a bit noisy, but its more than likely the bearing.
Mine had the same noise until the clutch pedal was pressed and then it was quiet, here is what was left of my bearing....

Definitely worth replacing while youre there, although I dont know if you can get them on their own - they normally come in a clutch kit (about Ԛ£100 from ECP/GSF).

If you dont know when the clutch was last done, that might also be worth changing - save yourself the hassel and expense of taking the gearbox out again.

the release bearing will rattle when the clutch is pressed in... if you release the clutch and hear a noise it's probably the box... common on e30's

Cool, I'll see if I can get the bearing on its own as the clutch itself looks like its got plenty of material left and no signs of damage etc.

Mine didnt, the bearing rattled until the pedal was pressed in. The gearbox is now in another 325i and is totally quiet (new clutch and bearing).
