what do you guy's reckon is 250HP a realistic target for a M52 2,8 motor with some cam's and a flowed head and a decent exhaust

Great engine to mod for not huge money.

From what Ive read on e36coupe.com, they reckon 230bhp can been seen for less than a Ԛ£1000 - BBTB and inlet (as above), Gruppe M replica induction kit, a decent exhaust and a remap.

The US M3 cams will make the difference apparently. The general rule on e36coupe.com is make sure they are the 3.0ltr cams, the 3.2 cams are too much for a road going 2.8.

As James says the 260bhp is quite achiveable from the M52, but how far do you go before you are into S50B30 Money? Be good to have a 260Bhp M52 but even better to have an S50 developing more power for the same or less money.
