I'm thinking of taking off the rocker cover and inlet manifold and painting them, my problem is I havent ever taken the manifold off before and dont know what it involves. I've read all the bollocks in the manual and it does'nt exactly fill me with confidance, so what i'm asking is do any of you wise owls have a idiot's guide to getting the mother off without wrecking the old girls internals. Any advice appreciated

Remove bolts then pull on the manifold. Simple.
What engine is it? on the m20 you'll need to pull down the spring loaded pipe. in the middle of the manifold. If you find it won't come off after removing all the bolts, you've missed one or more (easily done).
I can't remember there being anymore to it than that.

me too, I think the thermostat housing won't allow you to pull directly off because of the long middle bolt. It's a case of jiggling off the bolts then lifting up IIRC.
