Hello E30 owners,
I am thinking of putting side skirts on my 1993 316I tourer. I understand you need to drill 6 holes for the butterfly clips that hold the upper edge tight to the car body. How do you know where to drill the holes? and what size drill? can you buy a template?any advice from someone who has retro fitted these would be welcome
thank you Stephen.

Not certain, but I think you can still get a template from the stealers.

I fitted these to mine recently.

I tried to get a template from the dealers and was told not available.

To fit them, the easiest way i could find, was to first clip on the bottom edge, push the skirt in untill the pegs just touch the sill.
Now(i used electrical screwdriver)mark a dot in the place the peg touches.

I then used a 1.5mm drill to carefully pilot these holes.
Then used an 8mm drill to allow the plastic gromets to plug in.

The rest was easy, came out straight too :)

Thanks for the advice.

I've seen some for sale on ebay with bottom clips, top butterfly clips missing, though I imagine you can buy these seperate at the dealers.

I,m not sure how you managed to mark the holes though as I thought the butterfly clips went behind the skirts when fitted so how did you manage to mark up for those?

No its simple.

The butterfly clips, clip on to the skirt first, making marking the holes simple!

The clip has a sharp pointed end making it easy.

I see.

I wanted to work out if the job is possible before buying them.

I have a blue 93 316i tourer and I think they look better with the black skirts, seems that BMW only fitted them to earlier 325i's though as i've never seen the later 316i/318i 'lux' tourings with them.

One thing I have noticed is that there seems to be 2 or more different patterns of black skirts? (excluding M-Tecs). I'm not sure if there is also different lengths for 2 doors 4 doors and tourers?

thanks again Stephen
