Hi everyone i recently dropped the 12v 325 engine from a late E30 into my G reg 316i. Everything went smoothly engine runs mint but im having problems with the clutch!
The bite point is right on the floor and sometimes it wont go into gear or it drives when clutch is down!
I bled the clutch system as i suspected an air lock but this had no effect!
I am still using all of the hydraulics from the 316, are any of these components different on the 325? (longer plunger etc)
Just woundering if any one has done this conversion and overcome this problem??
Cheers

Ive just had a quick look on the ETK and all the part numbers for the hydraulics are the same for 316i and 325i, so there shouldnt be a problem there.
Have you used the 325 or 316 gearbox and did you replace the clutch with a new one?
The clutchs are different but Im not sure if that would be a problem.
If the clutch is old then it could just be well worn and the same goes for the master and slave cylinder.

Hi mate,
I Used 325 gear box and clutch!
what about the component which is moved By the hydraulics in order to engage the clutch (its like a plunger type thing at the gearbox side).
If the clutch was warn wouldnt it be the other way around (bite point at the top)
I dont know much about these hydralic clutches, dont like hydraulics, especially taking them apart they are messy things!

if the hydraulics all worked fine in the 316 and you're sure it's bled properly (it does sound like air in the system) then is it all assembled correctly? is the slave cylinder (the hydraulic thing on the left side of the gearbox) fixed correctly to the bellhousing?
look into the hydraulics first. if the operation feels nice and smooth then there's probably nothing mechanical installed wrongly. did you put the correct release bearing in? The slave cylinder pushes a large steel pivot bar forwards towards the engine (the one which pivots on the other side of the gearbox to the slave cylinder), which in turn pushes on the release bearing, which pushes the clutch forks in to release it. could the pivot bar have fallen off its pivot on the right side?

Im going home from work at twelve in order to have a play with it whilst it is still light!
everything is fitted correctly, smooth action but just seems like the first part of the pedal does nothing and is only held up by the spring!
as if something is too short and not pushing the bar enough in order to operate the clutch fully!
Like i say im off home in a bit to have a good look!
Il go down the scrap yard and check out a 6cylinder to c if there is any differences!
Cheers for your help everyone!
il report back later!

while it's light i'd look at all the hydraulic unions and connections and check for leaks while holding the pedal down. also look to see if the metal piping is undamaged/crushed.
if you end up starting to replace parts to try and fix it, start with the slave cylinder as they're pretty cheap for a pattern part!

You beat me to it Toby. Hows your 335i going btw?
If it is all correctly bled and assembled and a secondhand clutch was used then the 'forks' could be weak.

Good to hear your having fun
I had a look round your site, looks good. I might have to do something like that for mine.
I hope to have my S50 running middle of Feb, but it could be March as Im off snowboarding at the end of Feb and am busy working to pay for it.

I think i have identified a slight leak in the system, its where the slave cylinder is bolted to the bell housing. I think its hydraulic fluid not oil!
Could this be the cause of my clutch problems? ANy body know?
What should i do to fix this? Replace slave cylinder?
Cheers

Are you losing fluid from the reservoir?
When my slave cylinder went I had to top the fluid up atleast once a day for about a week and then every 15-20mins to get it the garage!!
If your sure its leaking then replace it, theyre cheap enough.

Not really loosing any fluid the leak is really slow but im gonna relace it this weekend any way, just order a new one and it looks easy enough to fit!
I dont mind doing stuff like that but i really dont fancy doing any thing that involves taking the box off especially when the engine aint been in that long! Plus typically rubbish weather!
Good effort with the 3.5 engine Toby, i considered that conversion but then opted for the easy option in order to get it done in a weekend! Oh ah n nice wheels too i used to have those on my old 316 carb you dont see many of them now! Especially not polished ones they have all been painted i think!
What is your 3.0 engine out of JMC?
Cheers

One thing you might want to watch out for is the master cylinder giving up after you replace the slave. I had this happen about 2 weeks after I replaced the slave cylinder.
The guy who did my slave cylinder was an ex-bmw dealer 'technician' and he told me I would probably be back within a month to have the master cylinder done. He was right
Apparently its quite common if you have old and new cylinders working together, something to do with a pressure difference??
I think those are mim wheels on Tobys?? Nice if you can find them, but only ever produced upto 15". I would love a set in 16" if they did them.
My engine is from a '95 E36 M3. 3.0ltr 24v jobbie.

I bet that goes a bit!
Are you going to this north of england meet next sunday?
Iv never seen one of these conversions in person!
This 325 lump in mine is really fast which is why im gettin so annoyed with this problem!
even now when the clutch is ok it absolutely ablitterates my mates e30 325 and even my other mates e36 325 which was rolling roaded at 225Bhp. Not sure if the engine has had anything done to it in the past but its the fastest 325 iv ever driven.
Where did you find your wheels from? what size are they? How much dare i ask did u pay? i paid all in all nearly £900 for my 15" BBS splitrims! Worth it though in my eyes! I like the euro look but without the cheese that is often associated!
How do you post a pic?

done in a weekend... good effort! seems like i've been working on this thing for about 30 years!!
wheels are indeed 15" mims, think i paid £125 for the wheels, with good toyo proxes on, from this forum. they're not in superb nick but look nice on the car.
i'm certainly going to the north meet on the 23rd.
you certainly don't want to have to drop the box if you don't have to, not a fun job!

Aint got no pics of the 325 yet. its red and has aftermarket sideskirts on!!!! !they will be coming off soon but im dreading the state of the sills underneath!
The car in general is in really good condition rear arches are mint!!!
Wil try and get a pic of it to mo! if i remember!
What do you think of 318is splitters? Iv got a brand new one at home cost £100 from BMW but im not sure weather or not to fit it! especially with no side skirts!
Think im gonna de-spoiler it too! its got an aftermarket m-tec one! it also has cream leather recaros which are offered for a swap with cloth recaros! i really dont like cream leather.

Ahh, I was getting confused when you said you had sold the car
The 325 is red? Good choice.
Put the iS splitter on and see if you like it, if not Im sure someone on here will take it off your hands. Plenty on people running them without side skirts and they look fine.
Get some piccys in the Members Rides section, people will soon tell you if it looks good or bad.
Hope you get the clutch problem sorted, its no fun to drive when you know its not right.

Good news all, My clutch is sorted!!!!!
I spent the night at some birds house on friday then i had to go to leeds on the sat. i got up fairly early and left. I went outside and got in my car turned the key and .......Nothing!!!! It was dead!
I tried jump leads but still nothing! I suspected a dodgey earth but couldnt sort the prob, some of my mates came down and we bumped the car!
I got it home and went to leeds in my mates car! got back late so couldnt do any thing to it that day!
On yesterday i got ready for battle! took the startermotor off( that was fun) found a dodgey corroded terminal cleaned it all up and put it back on. this took quite a while though as anyone who has done this will know its quite awkward!
Then i thought il stick a new slave cylinder on while im at it! this only took a few minutes then i bled it and took it for a spin. At first it was no better than before! but then it progressivly got better!
I believe that there may still be some small amount of air wandering around the system as thi morning when parking i think the pressure dropped a bit.
Does any one know why the clutch sorted its self out? are they self bleeding? should i bleed it again now its fully preasurised?
Cheers

BMW clutches can be right b******s to bleed if the system has been empty.
An alternative method I've read about, but not tried, is to connect a hose between the clutch slave bleed nipple and the bleed nipple on the front left brake caliper, and to bleed the clutch backwards by pumping the brake pedal. Be carefull not to introduce any dirt into the clutch system from inside either of the nipples.
