Anyone interested in getting a bit of an understanding of the e30 M42 eprom (175 ecu)? Inspired by some US forums I've been reading, I started to take a look at an e30 m42 binary off the web today and found a few maps (think i have some of the main ones), but there's still a lot that I don't understand, have only jsut scratched the surface really. Could be quite an interesting collaborative project? Anyone looked into this before? i figured seeing as there's no zone chip it wouldn't be treading on anyone's feet, and I've always fancied getting a bit more familiar with what goes on, also figured it would be useful if I go to MS to see what the standard fuel and timing looks like. .
Cheers
Tim

Sadly the ecu`s vary greatly with the american ones being mapped for 87 octane which makes them terrible for the uk 318is
even the german ones wont work as there mapped for 92-95 octane and make the engine scream with eratic idle.

yeah that's ok though Jayson, as i'm not too interested in the specific details of the maps, only their locations at the mo. As I'm sure you know, what you said's a bit of an oversimplification, the DMEs or ECUs as you put it are all the same, its just the eprom maps that are different. So some foreign eeproms would have been handy if i had some.
I just want to figure out the offsets of maps and things so I could look at mine and give myself some idea of what advance it runs etc and what the fuel/timing curves look like.
I take it you don't work with the BINs then Jayson, what software do you use?

It's a shame there's not much interest, and as I'm prolly megasquirting mine anyway its not a biggy. was just interested to unravel it. would have been nice to have a proper look at all the maps though. If I get some time i'll take another look, been way too busy with other stuff to give it any attention atm. found some of the important maps, wasn't 100% on the WOT and idle maps though and have a few 6x12 and 7x12 maps that don't seem to make much sense. not sure how many part fuel and timing maps there are, found some that looked about right though. i guess to go much further would require some ppl who are a bit more experienced than me to help out, or to play on my car a bit or build an emulator or something. or could just use a timing light :). motronic 1.3 looked a bit easier to play with when i had a gander, and lots of m3 peeps seem to have software to tweek it. I guess there's a lot more interest in this stuff on a high-performance car.
Might get a chap in the states to alter mine a little while i'm setting up MS else its gonna run like shit.

btw the 87 octane thing's wrong. US gas is measured in MON not RON which our gas is measured in, its RON rating would be higher. Plus BMWs are sposed to run on US premium, 91 MON

ant, that's great! thanks ever so much. the nblah.256 files were the files I already have which is good news, means i wasn't playing with totally irrelevant stuff!
thanks very much indeed, when i find some time and an eprom reader i'll have a proper look at this.
