I got temperamental speedo and fuel gauges (325i). I’m aware of wiki , but want other experiences of best method before I decided . Replace whole clocks, troubleshoot the causes etc . I’m novice but not afraid to get stuck in. Thanks

It is a bit of a process of elimination, no harm in checking the diff connections but my guess is a dry solder joint or corrosion on the PCB / bad earth. There was a thread a while back, someone with the same problem and was a dry joint.
You could get new clocks but that's opening a can of worms of getting a better one even if you do get a matching set.
If I find the thread I'll post a link
Edit: Here you go, might give you some ideas
