So after doing more research and confussing myself even more I think I have a plan.

M54 engine, z3 gs6 37bz 6 speed gearbox and e36 325i automatic propshaft

Along with a manual conversion, does this set up sound like a good idea

Will my diff be ok for now ita a 1.8 auto

The gs637bz did not come with the Z3 it came with the Z4 and E46 330 facelift. It is what I am going to be using on mine. I am still not sure of the best propshaft.

The gearbox just needs a rear mount fabricating but be careful to get a gearbox from the petrol. The GS6 was also fitted to the Diesel and that has a different bolt pattern to the bellhousing.

It is not the easiest of swaps but a few have been done now and plenty on line and a couple of points here too

why is it a tricky swap

Mainly wiring, the MS43 is a bit more involved than the previous MS42 on the M52, the intake is bigger and more bulky with the DISA and the emissions gear is a bit more involved and a good thing to replace before you put the engine in the E30.
