Spare the 17's look or perform or look crap comments as its not going to be helpful.
So options are
1) 215/40 probably the most correct size i.e. 604mm dia but fewer choices in quality tyres and thinnest sidewall
2) 215/45 better pick of brands/models but 625mm dia , should fit at rear? would not use at front as likely rub near valence with the offset CA bushes
3) 205/45 better pick of brands/models but less grip than 215s dia 616mm, still within the recommended fitment for 7.5 wide wheel
thoughts on possible fitment?
will 215/45 fit at rear?
205/45 PS5 or 215/40 PS4 at front?
tyres for 17x7.5"

I have been looking at this too as I have a set of 17" that look small for 17" on later cars and seem to look like 16" on the E30. I will be doing a lot of suspension work so tuning the springs damping for 17" should not be a problem. Z3 ran fine on the 17" and I can fit the M3 floating disks. I was looking at staggered 7.5 front and 8.5 back (1/2" more than the Alpina)
Much will be down to how low it is sitting though and how well you can tune the offset of the wheels. 17" gives you more freedom at the front because of the angle of the strut.
I have been looking at the feasibility of running E36 sizes 245/40 and 225/45. But the available tyres change a lot.
I can get a 245/40 on the rear of a FL but you have to get the offset mm perfect as there is only about 5mm clearance. I think a 225/45 will fit on the front but I would need the limit kit for the purple tag rack. I am not any lower than standard Mtech though
I was looking adding 5mm profile on the OEM Alpinas on the chromie because of the dire tyre choice 205/55/16 front and 225/50/16 for the back and that seems fine and would allow Michelins

I have GC coil over so can adjust height no problem same with spring rate. I’m going to soften them a little with the stiffer sidewall
They are 7.5” ET25 all corners
Not much in the way of 225 sizes for the rear around these parts except 225/45 which may fit but even bigger so that’s why I didn’t go for staggered

There is a mega thread on one of the US forums (R3v?) about wheel fitment, it has most combinations, have you seen that, good bedtime reading.
Can't see why a 215/45/17 would not fit at the rear, it is narrower than the staggered Alpina and only 8mm taller.
If I was going 7.5 all round I would probably do 215/40/17 all round as you can get PS5 in that here. A lot is going to depend on tyre availability I guess

EDIT: They replied and said not available. So id need to import and not sure it is worth the effort. Once upon a time I did import from the US a set of Michelin pilot sport exalto PE2 for 205/55/15
