Ran the car for about 30 minutes. Engine heated up just past the half way mark on the temperature gauge. Didn't want the engine to heat up too much so switched off. After switching off, lots of steam from under bonnet. Waited for engine to cool and saw I had loss all of the coolant in the reservoir. And reservoir cap seem loose,

Any suggestions as to what the issue might be?

Apologies - I forgot to mention the car.

It's a 1987 320i. Been off road for about 10yrs - managed to get it running nicely apart from a few issues including the coolant problem and the a faulty heater.

WOW,................ Ten years and did you think it would be fine ???
A Major service at the very least is in order and how the hell you did not get away with not changing the cam belt I dont know 8O 8O 8O 8O .
Treat her with respect and throw some "many pounds" at her and you could have a great car.

Had the major service done - spent a few grand. Coolant issue came up later.

Trying to get it back on the road but don't drive much. My drive car is a 2006 E46 M3 ...I only drive that about 1000 miles a year -its got about 37K on the speedo and I 've had it since 2010.

So I'm slowly trying to work through the issues on the E30. It is a great car - had it since 1993,
