I took my 318i M40 1988 for am MOT, when it came to the emissions test the tester struggled to get the last reading down. He and his accomplice were very helpful in that they tried moving the probe further and further out to get the reading down as he said it was telling him that there was a leak on the exhaust but clearly there wasn't. When I got home and looked at the certificate (it passed, another long story) and specifically the emission readings I was wondering if he had carried out the wrong test especially looking at last years certificate as this just had the HC and CO readings on it but this years had a fast idle test which is where I believe the last reading was taken.
Are there any MOT, current or former, testers on here that can throw some more light on this?
The other problem is that because the test took so long it was left idling for a very very long time and thus overheated and had to quickly be switched off and allowed to cool down and I'm just wondering if it has done any long term damage. I want to get a new viscous fan and renew the coolant before I run it again to see what happens, hopefully it is. Any views on this also?
Thanks all.
MOT Emissions Test and overheated

I can tell you that any overheating while idling for some time is a viscous fan problem. Hopefully, no damage has been done but it can result in head gasket issues down the road if it has badly overheated.

1988 CO less than 3.5 and HC less than 1200ppm

Thanks for that, very useful flow chart and looking at it it does look like the wrong test was done which is annoying as then it wouldn't of overheated as it wouldn't have to be idling for so long.
Still waiting for a new viscous fan to fit and then see what the state of play is then.
