Hey all,

Got an interesting one for you.

I have a 89’ 2 door 318i in Diamantschwarz that I pulled the engine out of.
I had a donor 323i that had a M20B25 installed and, interestingly, was running L-Jetronic which I pulled out and fitted into my 318i.
The engine has a 284 cam in it and was running in the donor car.

While I was putting the M20 in, I managed to score all the parts to convert to Motronic 1.3 as per the guide on the wiki.

So I did it all, toothed crank wheel, CPS, new injectors, loom, rotor on the cam, the whole thing.

When I go to crank, it feels like the timing I way off and can’t get it to start.
I confirmed the alignment with the crank and cam, all good.
There’s spark, fuel, and compression.

When I set the engine to the power stroke on cylinder 1, the rotor on the cam is pointing at the 4th spark lead. Odd.
I doubled checked all my timing, made sure the rotor and rotor bracket is in the right position, they have dowls so can’t be that wrong.

My next step is to put the old dizzy back that runs off the oil pump, maybe that was set to offset?

Anyone have any clues or actions I should try?

My last resort will be stand alone ECU so I can control the sequence. I can get all the parts quite easily for a Motec setup.

I’m an idiot.
The rotor bracket I used was the part made up to 86’, I needed the bracket post 86’.
The dowl indent is on the other side of the bracket which would make sense as to the symptoms I’m having.

Again, I’m an idiot.

I was going to suggest cam pulley, well worth checking it is the later sintered type and not the pressed steel type that can fail, same goes with the oil pump drive sprocket

Thanks mate, good call.
I’ll seek them out and swap at the same time.
