bought the car and it had been stood for quite some time, and before it was laid up it had recieved a new auto box and ecu at a cost of Ԛ£700, but its now the car is being used that the fault icon is illuminating on the dash and sticking in 3rd, but sometimes it works perfect kicksdown the lot, anyone shed any light on it, bit annoying as it was a new box!!

what car is it? did the new box have a new filter, some lazy people put the old clogged filter back in from the old box!
I would suggest taking the car back where you got it done!

previous owner had the box done but its been laid up since, the garage is a reputable auto transmission specialist thats local to me so everything concerning the work should be as it should, its a 88 325i with 71k on the clock and genuine as the previous owner had it for the last 9 years the interior is only the grey cloth but absolutely mint even the drivers seat which sways towards it being genuine mileage although i know they can be replaced, its a nice looking thing though 2 door de chrome facelift model with colour coded bumpers (white lowered on std 15"bbs alloys!!

could be sticky valves in the valve body, as suggested, if the place that fitted the box can be contacted then that should be the first port of call, could be under guarantee even, but the contact is not with you, it is with the previous keeper, so they may not be too accomadating.

Warm it up and then dip the fluid with it running in park, should be nice and red and should not smell burnt. If it is brown and smelly then a fluid change should be top of the list and check the filter in the gearbox sump.

Could be a pressure problem relevant to the kickdown cable adjustment too.

If you need any parts then this company are very good www.jpat.co.uk useful technical info too with exploded diagram if you click on parts and then BMW, ZF4HP22
