Right so my E30 has the usual one and also one near the battery tray. It says brake fluid on the lid but isn't this where the clutch fluid normally goes? Or did some years have two tanks for some odd reason? Presume someones replaced it with a incorrect lid but wanted to check

it's the clutch fluid reservoir.

all RHD e30's have the clutch fluid separate from the brake fluid.
if it's got t*ts or wheels it's bound to be trouble...............prove me wrong.

As far as I'm aware, brake fluid is the correct fluid :?

I just assume that the separate reservoir stops the need to have hoses going across the engine bay.

Clutch fluid and brake fluid are the same thing, although clutch fluid has a much easier life than that for the brakes. PattheCat is correct that it's a result of RH drive E30s having the brake cylinder on one side and the clutch on the other. If you look at the brake fluid reservoir, you will see it has a blanked off plastic nipple on the side, which is used to feed the clutch cylinder on LH drive E30s.
Brake fluid has a limited life span, and although the brake fluid gets changed occasionally, the clutch fluid needs renewing as well - something that is often overlooked.
