My 84’ 318i doesn’t seem to be over heating (temp gauge says normal temp) but after running for a while the coolant hose that goes from the top of the engine to the thermostat is extremely expanded and looks like it’s about to pop. Anyone know why this might be happening? Old hose? Bad thermostat?

Firstly........Welcome to the zone mate !!!
That does look a bit fat to say the least and I would change it anyway no matter what!.
Do that first (looks like you need to anyway) and see how it all looks then.
Oh by the way, car pics are mandatory for new guy`s. lol
Mart.

Might be worth getting a new coolant cap from BMW too. They aren't that dear.

M10 don’t have the best cooling system in my experience. Probably best to change the pipe and thermostat

If that hose is considerably hotter than the others this could also be down to poor flow of coolant,
