Looks like it's running too hot - should be biscuit brown if the mixture is correct - so looks like its running lean - rich would be carbon black - can also be attributed to incorrect timing.

Thanks, that confirms what I thought.

I replaced the air intake boot recently (it was cracked). I'm hoping that was causing lean running and explains the condition of the spark plugs.
