Take it this is a touring?
Pull off the panel that covers the rear wiper motor etc. Held on by the same kind of clips that hold door cards on.
You will now be able to unscrew the loop on the tailgate that engages with the lock mechanism with a 13mm open end spanner.
Now that the tailgate is open, remove the trim panel that covers the inside of the light clusters, and unscrew three 10mm bolts that hold the push button mechanism in. You will also have to unscrew the locking solenoid and unhook its wire link.
Once the button mech is removed the rest of the lock just falls out, and you can then work out what has gone wrong.
Know all this in detail, 'cos I've just spent the afternoon refitting it all to a rear ended touring that I've just straightened out.
