Boot seal safety

I have nearly completed the reassembly of my 323i after paint. I have not put a new boot seal in yet. Is it safe to drive, or am I likely to draw exhaust fumes in?

Keep the heater fan up full, and there's little chance of any fumes finding their way back through the rear window shelf vents from the boot, even if they get drawn into the boot in the first place.
