Distributor Cap Cover

Apologies for what is becoming a long list of stupid questions...

How important is the "cover" part of the distributor cap (the black plastic part in the picture)? Mine is currently in the boot, in a sorry state.

It's not the most vital part under the bonnet by a long way.

Is it just basic protection, or does it have a more important function like stopping arcing?

It has the fittings on it for another cover which extends over the cable connections and protects them from water ingress:

Long story short, it's not going to stop the engine running or be detrimental to anything serious. It's just a "cover" at the end of the day and I would imagine there's probably thousands of engines out there running perfectly happy without one.

Replace it if you can, but it's not top of the priority list if that makes sense.
