Good evening folks new member here, had a browse through the forum but can't find exactly what I'm looking for. I have a facelift 1989 325i sport and I need a new fuel pump and there are that many different types for sale I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction! Cheers

E30 fuel pumps come in four different types. There's the engine driven low pressure pump for the early carb. engines, and the external high pressure pump, under the rear of the car, for early injected engines, both of which are irrelevant to an '89 car.
The later pump assemblies are both 'in tank' types, and either have one fuel hose connection on the top, or two, depending on whether the car has a 55 litre or 62 litre tank. The actual pump is identical in both, and can be swapped from one to the other if desired. It's just the mounting frme that differs.
An '89 325i saloon should have the larger tank, so you need the single outlet pipe type, although a two pipe assembly can be used with the second pipe blocked off.

Wow as per usual you are a complete gold mine of info of all things E30's Brian. That's some useful info right there.

Is there any other way to identify other than putting an extra 7 litres in the tank if you have the larger of the two tanks? Mine is an 89' 325i touring but it's in storage at the mo so unfortunately I can't physically get to it...

Small tank has a S shaped pipe joining the two halves of the tank together at the bottom. Larger tank doesn't.

Thanks! I don't have a whole lot on my laptop but I've found this. Few things to get sorted before she is back out for summer but at least I'll have a few weeks to get it done now :)
