Hey guys,

Wondering your thoughts. I’ve been wanting to fit a cone air filter for a little while to get some more air into the engine and I’ve heard it’ll sound nice. obviously I’ve seen and heard from a few people that it doesn’t make any difference at all compared to stock.

Is this 100% true, does it really make zero difference in performance? It seems in theory it should.

Thanks

Unless you build a heat shield around the cone filter it will lose power as it will be sucking in hot air from the engine bay. Even if you do this you're not really going to see any noticeable gains. The best option is to fit a 'performance' filter in the standard air box or just leave as is.

Why won’t there be any noticeable gains?

This was a hot topic some years ago when the zone was at it's peak. Somebody (either here or independently) did a bench test, cone filter v stock airbox/filter v stock airbox/'performance' panel filter. The cone filter was judged least efficient and the standard set up and performance panel filter where pretty much the same. As Brian Mooooore often says, for something like airflow BMW got it right from the outset and improving on it is not very likely.

a replacement K&N panel filter in the stock airbox will slighty outflow a stock OE paper but at the stock hp level the benefit will be extremely small

AND a decent paper element will actually filter the air.

Good to know guys thanks for the responses. I’ve bought a Bosch one, I know it’s not a performance one but hopefully work well still
