Hey Guys,
I've had my E30 around 6 months now, and a little while a go I was investigating a short circuit. I had the glove box out to get to the wires behind and found an alarm control unit. I was a little surprised as I had no fob or anything with the car. The control unit wasn't bolted to anything and was just sat loosely on top of some bracketry behind the glove box.
Can anyone confirm if this is a standard fit item on an E30? I have googled the part number and the only reference I can find appears to be to E34 and E36's. It looks like someone has fitted this themselves later on as the wires through the bulkhead appear to be sealed with mastic and there's a few rogue cable ties holding bundles of wires together, however I can't see any obvious places where the harness has been spliced to accept the alarm.
Ultimately I want to remove it as its not doing anything since I have no fob. I tried unplugging it and then the car wouldn't start (it would crank) so I assume its cutting ignition? Does anyone know how this is wired in? Or have a wiring diagram for it?
Thanks,
E30 Alarm - Factory or aftermarket?

It's a BMW alarm, and this type was fitted to late E30s, or, it could have been a few years old before being fitted with one.
IF it was dealer fitted, the connections to your ignition system should be to a two pin white socket near the top right of the behind glove box area, with a plain green wire going to each pin. You need to unplug the plug in this socket, which may have plain black wires, plain green wires, or green/red, and replace it with a similar plug fitted with a loop of plain green wire hopefully tied to the loom nearby. If it's not there, you'll have to make a loop from the wiring you've unplugged.
If the installation is a DIY or other "professional" one, then it could be connected into anywhere, but if it's interrupting the ignition, it'll still be connected to plain green wires.

Thanks Brian,
That's a lot of help. I will take a look for those connections as you mention. Hopefully it'll be fairly straightforward.
