Gearbox cover?

Hi could someone please assist? I looked under my e30 (325i sport 1991) and noted that the end of the gearbox is 'open', exposed to the elements. Is this how it should be or is some sort of cover required? As per the photo. Thanks in advance .....

Looks like you're missing the bowl reinforcement item number 11141286342.

Maybe someone forgot to re fit it after having the oil pan off.

no it shouldn't be like that at all, also get that flywheel seen to, it looks a little on the rusty side.

As above, but I would also look at the clutch if the flywheel is that bad. Rusty pressure plate no good to anyone.

Also be aware that this is a structural item between the engine and gearbox.

Yes Paultv is correct. That part bolts the engine to the gearbox at the bottom. Without it there will be more strain on the bolts and threads higher up
