What is this?

I've never known what this is, it can't be that important as it doesn't seem to be connected, I stuck a bit of gaffer tape over it years ago and forgot about it.

Does it have a part number? On what I presume is your 1987 320i, it could be an (L-Jetronic) electronic ignition module, or part of the headlamp wash/wipe system, perhaps...

Yes it is on my 1987 320i. It could be part of the Jetronic system as I swapped in an M20B25 ages ago and it wouldn't be used for the Motronic system.

I'll see if there's a part number on it when I'm next down at the garage it's in.

Common name for it is ignition amplifier

It's the Ignition control module for Jetronic.It came in a Bosch version and a Siemans version.Your's is of the Siemans variety.
