I've removed the head on my 89 325i and refitted after refurb. The first time I drove it, all was good but today I went up the road and it started making a load tappet noise as if no oil was getting to the top end. I checked all valve clearances when the head went back together.
Any common problems or mistakes that could cause this. How is oil distributed to the top of the engine?
Any ideas/thoughts much appreciated.

There is a 'spray bar' that runs the length of the head. Basically a thin pipe with perforations to allow oil to be sprayed from above. It's not uncommon for the holes to get blocked over time. Remove the bar and soak it in petrol for a while and it may quieten things down.

Thanks. I'll have a look at this when I get a chance.

do this then afterwards block one end & use compressed air to blow out the little spray holes, then refit.Cloggy Saint wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2019 7:20 pmThere is a 'spray bar' that runs the length of the head. Found the problem. I took the rocker cover off and the spray tube. The tube was clean and free of debris. As i was refitting the tube i noticed that one of the rocker arms had moved as the clamp that holds it in place had come adrift. I took the clamp off to close it a bit. Refitted and Now all good.
Cheers for your help.
