So as my handbrake lever is split, I decided to look into the overall handbrake condition on the car.

The actuator is fine, the cable end at the drum on one side has a damaged/broken return spring -

Just to confirm my worst fears, is the cable NOT removable without pulling the outer sleeve from the car - in other words, pulling the inner out at the wheel, and feeding a new one in?

It says you can do this in Bentley, but in practice all is jammed up at the point where the outer meets the body....

any advice welcome

So I get the old knackered cable out - had to cut it, but the tube attached to the body has a restriction inside it that won't allow the new cable end to enter??? WTF? frigging impossible.

So I have "and you'll be left with the solid metal ferrule rusted to the tube"

I've used heat, penetrating oil, a stud extractor, non of which will move this thing - looks like I'll have to drill it out, no easy task.
