Just checking my valve clearances, out in the hot sun, I can see and feel quite serious pitting on a number of the cam lobes - couples with what looks like quite bad wear ( lines around the circumference) its not on all -

I've checked the oil feed spray pipe, it works fine - so would this indicate the car being run dry in the past or is surface pitting on the peaks just normal failure?

Cars done about 170K miles and treated really badly in the past.

sounds like you,ve answered your own question. AT 170 ,000 miles you would expect a bit of wear.
every time you do a cold start the oil has got to get up to the top of the engine, spray bar. mine has a slightly long cold start crank which is fine as it allows the oil a chance to get up to the spar bar before it kicks in.
and i allow it to idle for 10 sec while i,m putting the seat belt on, and don,t floor it untill the engine is warmish.

Yup, I treat mine much the same, but the surface of some of the lobes have pieces knocked out with sharp edges - I'll get a photo up for reference - so I reckon maybe some worse than usual wear in the past...

I'll look at a head rebuild for later in the year...

yep good plan. why not do a compression test, before your rebuild then you can ensure the piston rings are o.k
with the rest of the engine. you can do 2 types dry and wet .
dry first . if compression low . add oil in the cylinder if reading goes up = rings / pistons / bores are knackered, worn . if still low reading with wet test means valves (top end ) are knackered.
