Hi,
while working on the gearbox of my e30 I noticed that the input shaft bearing was shot.
I bought a new one and replaced it. Easy.

I also noticed that when the gearbox was in neutral if I manually spun the input shaft, the output shaft spun at the same speed.
I think this is odd.
I can change gears but it is a bit hard to spin the shaft and input and outut shafts keep spinning at the same speed.
I can see the selectors moving and engaging gears.
Has anyone spun the niput shaft manually?
What should be the correct behavior?

Thank you

The input shaft is only supported by one bearing in the gearbox. The second bearing for the input shaft is the spigot bearing, in the end of the crankshaft, so with the gearbox on the bench, it is not properly located.
There is a bearing between the input and output shafts, but with sideways loads on it, because of the unsupported input shaft, it may well tend to lock up a bit, giving what you describe.
If the input and output shafts are spinning at the same speed in anything other than neutral or fourth gear, then there is definitely something seriously wrong with this gearbox.

thank you for your reply. If I didn't know I haven't tampered with any gear and the gearbox has worked fine until now I'd think there is something wrong with it as well.
I'll have a better look at it keeping in mind what you've just told me. I hope I can figure out what is wrong with it. :?
