Hi folks. I've just filled my 325i with coolant after re-fitting the cylinder head. It has a new thermostat and water pump. It has been bled. Before any work was carried out it never went any higher than just under halfway on the temp gauge.

At idle it now creeps over the halfway mark. When I take the revs up to about 2000 rpm for about 20 secs the temp will dip below the halfway mark.

Not sure what to do with it now. Perhaps more bleeding required?

Yes, bleed it again until you purge the system of any air pockets. Keep the heater on while you do it.

Don't forget, it is unusually warm at the moment!

It is also possible that you have fitted a thermostat from a four cylinder engine which opens at 88 degrees. Six cylinder engines should have an 82 degree thermostat.

Ah, I forgot about the heater!!

I live in the North of Scotland so I can promise you outside air temperature is not a factor.

You got me thinking there Ben, took the T/stat back out and it's the right one.

Doesn't matter where the heater dial is when you initially fill and bleed the system with the engine off, but when the engine is running, the dial must be more than 15 degrees away from the fully cold position for everything to bleed properly.

Sorry about the bum steer.

Probably needs more bleeding.
