I think I'm going to cut/drill the tail panel out of my car and replace with a new OEM piece, instead of doing lots of little repairs on the current one. I was wondering if anyone has done this in the past and has some pointers or advice? A guide anyone may know of would be great also.

Is this a really hard job and one that shouldn't be tried by a non-professional? Or is this quite straight forward in your opinion? I can weld and have decent cutting tools.

Cheers.

if you google "Tony BMW",the 2nd entry, where he restores an E28 M5,shows him replacing a rusted back-panel.He does make it seem quite straightforward.

Straightforward it may be, but it's still a major operation.
If all the rust is below the bumper line, I'd have no hesitation in cutting a new panel in half, and just fitting the lower bit. Joint will be completely hidden by the bumper.

This thread shows a new rear panel that has been brazed rather than welded.

i think they are brazed on the vertical seam where they connect to the rear arch. and welded elsewhere

Well, Tony does make it look like a five-minute job. But yes... Doubting my skills on this one. BMW want £311 for the whole panel. (the whole thing is not in good shape). I called my local restoration place and he's coming back to me with a price.

I'll just stick to the easier bits for now.

Cheers guys.
