This is really dull, but I need to fix this issue - car cold, runs quietly, no belt noise - when hot at idle there's a "mushy" belt sound from the crank pulley - spray with a bit of silicon and it goes away for half a minute. Its not the water pump bearings (new) nor the alternator bearings (new) or even the belts which are 6 months old - so what's the best belt design (ribbed or V) and make, my power steering belt came from BMW -

Could this be wear in the crank pulley causing "bottoming" (ooh er )

Anyhooo, thoughts, advice?

Paul :-)

Vee belts will slip if they bottom out in the pulley. If the bottom of the vee in the pulley is polished, then that's what's happening, but it's unlikely with new belts, if they are the correct spec.
Ribbed vee belts are so designed to make them run cooler than solid, because of their increased flexibility around small radius pulleys.
