Once again I am indebted to paultv from Germany, this time for suggesting that the reason I and others got repeated false warnings of brake light failure was because of poor earthing of the rear light cluster. I had tried cleaning up the contacts for the cluster with no effect and assumed it must be the reed switch in the bulb failure device.
I drilled a small hole in the steel chassis of the rear light cluster on both sides and fixed a new cable with a self-tapper, running it down to the corner of the plastic outer casing, which is cut away on the corner anyway, and from there behind the boot lining to a convenient earthing point. I have just come back from a round trip down to the French Alps and the light never came on, whereas previously it would be on within a mile or so. And yes, I have checked that it still gives a warning if I take the bulb out!
It occurs to me that as a number of people have this problem it would be worthwhile mentioning this in the Wiki.
Now all I need is a way of stopping the brake pad wear warning coming on when it shouldn't.
