Hi folks,

I presume my slave or master cylinder must have failed as I can't select a gear when engines running. Can some folk help confirm this?

Pedal feel is rubbish and I can only select a gear when the engine is not running.

If in a gear and start the car it jumps even with foot on clutch.

There's fluid in the resovior, but it looks dirty.

RH drive E30s have a separate (from the brake fluid) reservoir for the clutch, consequently the fluid rarely, if ever, gets changed, resulting in what you've found.
If the fluid level in the pot is still where it should be, the master cylinder main seal has failed, but fitting a new cylinder will push the piston in the slave cylinder that little bit further than it has been for years, and it will likely fail as well.

Ta, I've read on here both should be done if one fails.
