I have a 1989 320i and the reverse light switch is near the top of the gear box on the drivers side. If you see the linkage going to the gear box from the gear stick, it is just below that.

If you want to test the actual switch without going under the car, remove the gear stick boot (inside the car) and you should see a cable coming up infront of the shifter. Possibly Blue/white and Green/white cables. There is a connector here, so just unplug it and put a multi meter across it, make sure you test the switch end and the not the power!!!!!!

I have a problem with the reverse lights on mine, but i checked the switch and it seems ok!!!!!

If you need any more details let me know, i can take a pciture or something if it helps.

Im leaving it for a summer job :D
