Hi guys, e30 m10 318 tank gauge is reading just over a quarter tank but my reserve light is on. I've taken the sender out and the float moves freely. There was a wire in there that wasn't quite connected which I've connected but still no change.

Do you reckon the sender could be okay and something else is causing the bulb to come on like a short in the circuit?

Never known a low fuel switch to be faulty in a sender that hasn't had its case mangled, but there's always a first time.
A short circuit of the relevant wire to earth will make the light come on. It's a very simple circuit - just a bulb with ignition switched 12 volts+ on one side, with the other side being earthed by the level switch.

The switch is located in the sender unit? Is that something that can be fixed or would need a new sender?

Switch is part of the sender, but it's of very basic and simple construction, so it should be possible to see what's wrong with it.
