hi folks.

looking for a bit of advice, i'm about to fit a DSSR to a mates e30, he's had a B&M short shifter fitted for a while & he's just bought a DSSR to go with it.

now the thing is when the shift lever was fitted the original selector rod had to be bent so it would clear the vibration damper.

so, what is the best way of removing the damper? i would like to be able to avoid dropping the entire prop shaft if i could,

would it be possible to undo the bolts that mount to thew guibo, let that end drop down a little & remove the damper that way??

when i fitted my DSSR it was straight forward as there was no vibration damper on my prop (P/O must have removed it) so i've never had to do it.

any help/advise/pic's would be a massive help.

There's a central spigot on the front of the prop that locates in a bush in the gearbox output shaft, so the prop won't drop down, even with the guibo bolts removed. It may just be possible to lever the engine and box over far enough to disengage this, especially if you unbolt the gearbox crossmember and let it down a bit, but I wouldn't recommend it. I suspect you might get it apart, but find it impossible to get back together.
Unbolting the centre bearing and lowering it is the correct way of course.

Cheers Brian, so to clarify, undo the bolts at the G/box end, undo & lower the centre bearing support & if need be lower the G/box a little.

I'll be doing this in a few days (if the weather holds out) so fingers crossed

If you lower the centre bearing, that will be all you need to do. That's the correct way to remove an E30 prop.
Don't forget that the arrows on a guibo must point towards the flange that they're bolted to, and also remember to preload the centre bearing when you bolt it back up. (Loosely bolt it up, mark where the bolts sit in the slots, then slide the carrier 5mm forwards from that position before finally torquing it up.)

Sad to say I've not got round to this yet, various reasons/excuses.

For got to ask, is it possible to get this done without dropping the exhaust??
The car in question has a one peice exhaust (from the down pipes to the back box is all welded together as one)

From what I can see it "might" be possible but I just want to check first.

Anyone know? Never had to do this before :o:
