Here we go again... reverting to the fountain of E30 Knowledge! This plug is spliced into the headlamp loom. I think it's where the active check control plugs into the loom, given the colour of the wires? But it's not a 6 cylinder car. If someone could confirm or otherwise that would be great, thanks!

Only one I can see. I don't think it was plugged into anything beforehand... car is a 1990 318i Lux. Wires are yellow/grey and brown/grey.

Brown/grey and grey/white are the colours of the plug where the intensive wash/headlamp wiper loom connects to the body loom.

Ah yes, thanks Brian. I think that must be it - the contours on the inside of the plug fit the female plug on the right of this pic of the headlamp wiper loom:
