Softer shocks

When I got my E30 about 7 year ago i got silly and fitted sports springs, shocks and 17 inch rims. I must finally admit the ride is dreadful. It goes round corners flat, but for the rest of the drive it is too hard. Will 16 inch rims and Bilsteins make much of a difference? Anyone running something similar?
