Rear wheel bearing on Drum brake model

My son has a 318i with drum brakes at the rear. He is trying to change the rear wheel bearings, but the hub with the bearings on it will not come off. He has tried belting it with various hammers and mallets, using a big crowbar and even using heat, but to no avail. Any suggestions?
